This weekend was the end of training wheels for Luke. If you've know me for a while, you might be thinking this sounds familiar - almost exactly a year ago Luke was riding sans training wheels (see earlier post here), but he never really got beyond the basics and wanted them back on (he was only 3, so we obliged). This time we were the ones telling him he was ready (he was so ready) - he was hesitant, but tried anyway and did a great job!
He can start and stop and steer completely without assistance. He still needs to work on turning around in the road - he likes to stop and turn his bike around - but he can steer enough to go around the cul-de-sac. Its going to be a fun summer of bike riding!
This small (12") bike was a hand-me-down from neighbors several years ago and it has been wonderful. John learned on it two years ago and then passed it on to Luke when he got a big bike (yes, that's John riding in the background, arm cast and all!). The single piece of advice I have for helping your child learn to ride a bike is letting him/her ride a lot with training wheels and preferably on a small, easy to maneuver bike. Once the boys really got the hang of steering, stopping, starting, balancing with training wheels, the transition to no training wheels was pretty smooth. Then, once John mastered the small bike (without training wheels), we moved him up to a large bike (a 20") pretty quickly.
